The Ohanaeze Ndigbo has directed Igbos to cast their votes for the
presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku
Abubakar, in the February 16 presidential election.<a name='more'></a></h3>
<div class="hyphenate ">
The endorsement of the former vice president was announced by the President General of the Igbo socio-political group, <strong>John Nwodo</strong>,
in a statement released on Thursday, January 24, 2019 after a meeting
of the Ime Obi, the group's highest decision-making council.</div>
<div class="hyphenate ">
He noted that the decision was carefully made
in consideration of many issues, especially in regards to the plans of
candidates on the restructuring of the federation.</div>
<div class="hyphenate ">
The group also noted that Atiku's choice of <strong>Peter Obi</strong>, a former Anambra State governor, as his running mate gives the Igbos an opportunity for inclusivity in government.</div>
The statement read, <em>"After
a critical and dispassionate appraisal of the issues and the visible
fault lines in our polity, including the analysis of the election
manifestos of the various parties, especially with regards to the
restructuring of the federation and continued relevance of our people in
the Nigerian geopolitical space, the meeting resolved as follows:</em>
<div class="hyphenate ">
<em>"That Ohenaeze remains the apex
socio-cultural organisation that works for the interest of the Igbo in
and outside Nigeria. It attempts to aggregate the views of all other
Igbo platforms.</em></div>
<div class="hyphenate ">
<em>"Ohanaeze notes particularly that a major
political party (PDP) by the nomination of our son, Peter Obi as the
vice presidential candidate, has given Ndigbo an opportunity for
inclusivity. Ndigbo must seize the moment.</em></div>
<div class="hyphenate ">
<em>"That the presidential candidate of PDP,
Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has made an avowed commitment to restructuring of
the federation and reconfirmed same during his recent visit to the
United States in his meetings with high-level US officials.</em></div>
<div class="hyphenate ">
<em>"In consideration of the above and other
relevant existential factors pertaining to the treatment of the Igbo in
our polity, the Ime Obi Ohanaeze, therefore, hereby ratifies the
decision reached at the Ohanaeze National Executive Committee (NEC)
meeting held in Enugu on Tuesday, January 22, 2019 to adopt the Atiku
Abubakar/Peter Obi ticket in the 2019 presidential election.</em></div>
<div class="hyphenate ">
<em>"Ime Obi therefore endorses and embraces
fully this ticket without equivocation, especially with regards to the
position of Ndigbo at the Awka Declaration, which insisted on a complete
restructuring of the Nigerian polity."</em></div>
<div class="hyphenate ">
The group urged Igbos to use their voters' cards as a potent tool to ensure <em>"a restructured polity and for a better society"</em>.</div>
<div class="hyphenate ">
<strong>2019 presidential race</strong></div>
<div class="hyphenate ">
The Ohanaeze's endorsement of Atiku is a boost as he goes toe-to-toe with incumbent president, <strong>Muhammadu Buhari</strong>, of the <strong>All Progressives Congress (APC)</strong> at the polls next month.</div>
<div class="hyphenate ">
They both face competition from 70 other candidates including <strong>Kingsley Moghalu</strong> of the <strong>Young Progressive Party (YPP)</strong>, <strong>Fela Durotoye</strong> of the <strong>Alliance for New Nigeria (ANN)</strong>, and <strong>Omoyele Sowore</strong> of the <strong>African Action Congress (AAC)</strong>.</div>

Nigeria has over 371 documented tribes
scattered all over the country and not all of them are exposed to the
western world as many of the others are. Beyond those that have been
found, who knows if some still lie unknown.The Kambari people are an ancient rural community in in Birnin Amina in
Rijau Local Government Area, Niger state — one of the few who still
practice nudity. They are a forgotten tribe satisfied with their simple
way of life and their lack of governmental support for a sustainable
community. The Kambari people do not speak English or Hausa, but speak
their native Kambari. They stay in their small communities and only
interact with others when they have to go to the farm and market.</div>

<h2 class="mainTitle">
Movie Review: Lionheart is a remarkable display of rare Nollywood elegance<strong class="hyphenate lead" id="lead">Lionheart excels most prominently at weaving magical moments out of the most mundane things.<a name='more'></a></strong></h2>
<h3>
Past midway through Lionheart, right before the final act commences,
the Obiagus sit for dinner, a scene that'll go down as one of the most
enthralling four minutes in the history of Nollywood filmmaking.</h3>
<div class="hyphenate ">
The dinner scene, enhanced strikingly by the
lavish exhibition of the Igbo culture, is a terrific, heartwarming
display of familial harmony. This spellbinding scene arrests the
viewer's attention with its style, simplicity and the utter disregard
for the temptation to simply move the plot along.</div>
With her directorial debut, ageless Nollywood veteran, <strong>Genevieve Nnaji</strong>,
perfectly blends an innocuous plot with a richness of elegance that
shines through and stuns in ways not a lot have been able to do in the
industry. No wonder Netflix could not resist her charm.
<div class="hyphenate ">
Lionheart tells the story of the Obiagus, a
family in the transport business that encounters a financial crisis and
has to be saved by the smarts of its heiress, Adaeze (Nnaji) and the
understated shrewdness of her uncle, Godswill, played by the magnetic <strong>Nkem Owoh</strong>.</div>
<div class="hyphenate ">
Lionheart's ensemble cast itself is dipped in
the wealth of experience that could have produced nothing but the
exceptional result that's on display.</div>
<div class="hyphenate ">
<strong>Pete Edochie</strong> is Ernest, the
patriarch who has to sit on the sidelines after a health setback limits
him to be nursed back to health by his wife, Abigail, played by the
enigmatic <strong>Onyeka Onwenu</strong> who guards him jealously.</div>
<div class="hyphenate ">
Even though Lionheart's central plot revolves
around the Obiagus' financial troubles, it's more about the family's
spirit of togetherness than about its failing business. The movie
resonates with viewers because it tackles themes of love, of family and
of duty.</div>
<div class="hyphenate ">
<span class="caption" itemprop="caption" style="max-width: 788px;"></span>
</div>
<div class="hyphenate ">
Despite her disappointment with her father's
initial decision to not entrust her with the family business, Adaeze,
with her mother as her counsel, has to pick herself up and save the
family business from wolves in the form of an insider and a business
rival.</div>
<div class="hyphenate ">
<strong>Kanayo O. Kanayo</strong> commands an
imposing presence as Igwe Pascal, an opportunistic business rival who's
ready to pounce at the hint of blood. His performance is nothing less
than you would demand of a man who's spent the bulk of his years
onscreen being the bad guy.</div>
<div class="hyphenate ">
There are a few chinks in Lionheart's armour, enough for some to argue that it is incredibly flawed.</div>
<div class="hyphenate ">
Despite having five credited writers
(including Nnaji), the central plot could have been better with some
much-needed tension, even when it creates the opportunities to explore
them. There are moments that could have been better pieced together, the
tone is sometimes uneven, and the plot, sometimes, predictable.</div>
<div class="hyphenate ">
However, these chinks only prevent Lionheart
from being a perfect movie. They don't prominently get in the way of its
elegance and the viewers' appreciation of it.</div>
<div class="hyphenate ">
The movie's incredibly accomplished cast is
pivotal to holding it together even when ordinary things are on display.
This is what makes the dinner scene so iconic that future generations
of Nollywood filmmakers will look to it for inspiration.</div>
<div class="hyphenate ">
Lionheart's most prominent pairing is Nnaji
and Owoh, both with decades of experience between them, and both with
the magnetism to weave the magic that the movie requires to shine. Nnaji
acting as foil to Owoh's level-headed comic shenanigans creates a
balance that makes their pairing one to be impressed with.</div>
<div class="hyphenate ">
To its credit, Lionheart is strongest in its character moments.<span class="caption" itemprop="caption" style="max-width: 788px;">Owoh and Nnaji's prominent pairing is one of Lionheart's best features
</span>
</div>
<div class="hyphenate ">
Adaeze's moments with her mother before the
dinner scene and her father after the dinner scene perfectly exhibits Ms
Nnaji's Midas touch with weaving magical moments out of ordinariness.</div>
<div class="hyphenate ">
Lionheart's generous visual worship of Enugu,
where the movie is set, is another notch on its well-acclaimed belt with
its bilingual mix a captivating attraction.</div>
<div class="hyphenate ">
The grace and elegance with which Ms Nnaji
dramatises Lionheart and decks it in visual splendour is one that the
Nollywood crowd would, no doubt, demand more of.</div>
<div class="hyphenate ">
Lionheart's irresistible appeal cannot
possibly be adequately captured in mere words, you'd have to watch it to
feel it cast a spell all over you.</div>

convincing to try this colour, orange looks incredible against darker

certainly NSFW</i>.<br />

<em>This season was all about prints, prints and more prints and if one thing is clear, it's that plaid is here to stay. <strong>Versace</strong>, <strong>Michael Kors</strong>, <strong>Fendi</strong>
and more featured the timeless pattern in their Fall/Winter 2018
collections, showing bold interpretations and top-to-toe looks sporting
the checkered motif. Colourful and eye-catching, the pieces served
straight Cher Horowitz from Clueless vibes and we’re all for it.</em><br />

<span style="background-color: white; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">I’ve been married for two years now. I’m married to a good man. Sometimes I lack the right words to describe how good my husband is. He provides everything and even provides for my fears. Ike senses my fears and strives to make things right for me.</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="background-color: white; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">Before I met him, there was Sam. Sam is short for Samuel. He insisted I called him Sam because he couldn’t connect to the Samuel. I didn’t know why that was but that was the explanation he gave me.</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="background-color: white; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">Sam was my kind of man. Physically, he had everything I wanted in a man; Tall, well-spoken, handsome and broad chested. He had a way of making a woman fall for him so deeply that you would do whatever he asked you to do without thinking twice. He was cunningly manipulative. It’s so subtle you wouldn’t know he’s manipulating you to serve his purpose.</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="background-color: white; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">We had plans of getting married. He talked about it often but did very little to back his claim. His goal every year was to marry me the next year. Just when the year was about to end, he would start changing his plans. That didn’t bother me until he did it for far too long. I got the impression he was just playing tricks on me or it was one of his usual ways of manipulating people.</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="background-color: white; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">We fought about it a lot of times. He kept giving me the same excuse of not having enough money to settle down. Not as though I wanted to marry him by all means. He was my man and I deserved to know the goals for our relationship. I deserved to believe the relationship was worth my investment. We kept seeing each other but nothing changed.</span><br />
<a name='more'></a><br style="background-color: white; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="background-color: white; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">Four years into our relationship, nothing had changed. Same old promises and fail. I opened up my options and started meeting new people. I thought of getting him jealous so he would saddle up and be a man who kept his word. That was when I met Ike. Ike is the man I’m living with now. We dated for two years and got married. Talk about a man who knows what he wants.</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="background-color: white; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">You see, when I realized Ike and I were getting serious, I told Sam about it. I let him know I’ve met a man who was serious about me and wanted to marry me as soon as possible. Sam didn’t attach any seriousness to what I said. It was a joke to him until the day I told him it was over. I packed the things I had in his house and walked away. He didn’t pursue or even tried to stop me. For a whole week, he didn’t call. Usually, when we had a fight, I was the first to call so I guessed he took this to be one of those usual fights.</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="background-color: white; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">I didn’t call. He didn’t call. Then he called. That was nine days after the fight. He didn’t call with an apology. He called to flex his ego. I cut the line and didn’t pick any of his calls and didn’t answer any of his numerous messages. He started using threats to get my attention. That didn’t work, too. I was so deeply in love with Ike and nothing could scare me.</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="background-color: white; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">I moved on and settled fast with Ike. He got word of my new relationship with Ike and started talk-thrashing me. He told friends that I left him because he didn’t have money and even called me a gold digger in front of many others when we attended a wedding of one of our mutual friends. His bitterness surprised me because I thought he’d moved on after a year and half of our breakup. He didn’t move on. He harbored ill intentions towards me, but who was I to care?</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="background-color: white; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">The day I posted my wedding invitation on Facebook, he was the first to like it. He sent me a congratulatory message right afterward and I responded; “Thank you.” I thought he’d moved on but I was lying…</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="background-color: white; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">The day after our wedding, I was going through the gifts people sent to us with my husband. Somehow, one of the envelopes caught my attention. It was different from all the envelopes. We received white envelopes but this envelope was brown. Instinctively, I got drawn to it. I opened it up and what I saw still traumatizes me; printed photos of me and Sam having sex! Somehow, his face didn’t show in any of the photos. It was only me sprawled naked across the bed with that his small dick either in my hand or in me. It came with a note; “I hope whoever sees this don’t get mad. This is only the beginning.”</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="background-color: white; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">I excused myself and quickly dashed off to the washroom with the envelope. I stayed there thinking of every option available to me amid tears. My head started aching. I started feeling dizzy. I thought I saw my world crumbling down. My husband came knocking; “Dear are you ok?” “Yeah, I’m ok. Yeah, I remember when Sam recorded the video. We both watched it and laughed about it. I was so in love and somehow, I thought he was the one I was going to marry. For once, I thought Sam could not do that to me, a woman he once loved.</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="background-color: white; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">I gathered courage and scheduled a meeting with him, I played sober when I met him because I wanted him to see reasons with me. I pleaded with him to stop before destroying everything for me. He said; “I loved you but you played me for a fool. This is payback and there’s nothing you can do to stop it.” I shivered. It was like negotiating with the devil. I told him; “There should be something I should do to make you stop. Just tell me, what do I give or do for you to stop?” “Sleep with me,” he retorted. “I miss having sex with you. Let’s do it one more time and you won’t hear from me again.”</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="background-color: white; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">He gave me one week to think about it. He warned; “If I don’t get a positive answer from you, this time it won’t be just photos. I would send the whole video to your husband.” He left. I called him to reconsider but he wouldn’t mind me.</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="background-color: white; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">For the next one week, I lived in fear. I didn’t know what to do or who to speak to about it. I started counting the days. Oh, how I wish I could stop the time from running. Soon, the week was over. He called; “So what do you say?” I asked, “Where do you want me to meet you?” He asked, “Where do you think would be comfortable for you.” I didn’t answer that. He suggested a hotel I knew too well. I declined. He suggested another hotel. That was very far from home so I accepted to meet him there.</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="background-color: white; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">The next day, I set off to meet him at the hotel. It was a Saturday—one dull Saturday. He got to the hotel first and sent me a message; “When you get here come straight to room 547. You don’t need to knock.”</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="background-color: white; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">I got there, Knocked and he asked me to come in. He was in his boxer shorts and playing this loud music. He didn’t want to waste time I guessed. I sat on the bed, looked him in the eye and asked; “I hope after this, you won’t seek to blackmail me again?” He answered; “It depends. if you become a good girl, I would leave you in peace.” I started taking off my shirt. He didn’t have to take anything off. All was off already.</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="background-color: white; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">Just when I took my shirt off, we heard a knock on the door. We didn’t say a word. The second knock came. He looked at me. I looked at him too. “Are you expecting somebody?” he asked. I only shook my head. He went to open the door to see who that was.</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="background-color: white; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">Guess what? My husband walked right through the door and came to sit on the bed. He looked at me and smiled. I smiled back and said; “You are right on time.” Sam didn’t know what was going on. He felt lost. He was expecting a certain reaction from me but he didn’t get it. My husband addressed him calmly; “Sam, I know you are surprised to see me here. Well, my wife told me about it. She even showed me the photos. I’m not here to fight but to tell you to stay off my wife. She’s the reason this case didn’t end up with the police. She pleaded to settle it gentlemanly with you. So let everything end here or things will get worse for you.”</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="background-color: white; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">I picked up my shirt and followed my husband out of the door. I didn’t look back. He looked dead to me. The mixture of shame and fear on his face was enough for me. He underestimated my courage and I was happy to prove him wrong.</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="background-color: white; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">Ultimately, I’m thankful to God for an amazing husband. His heart and willingness to forgive make me humble all the time.</span></div>

PLENTYTHINGS.COM.NG<br />
<b>Before his death in 1997, Fela Kuti had combined biting political
commentary and stinging insults with a sound that urged listeners to
dance. The Afrobeat patriarch perhaps overdid both, leaving too little
left for anyone to innovate enough to find widespread acceptance—unless
the sound is used in service of pop music.</b><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxS8WchxltTSiNc61jcM1d-gPbB1bR_Veb-JTIbTJqFDkEtxNOtX6WMqdj4mB-2mA0ALiqAAKbarKEnHkPf2_R2PNflf0LnyjHpN1vTaj-i8cJXdwfmi32MKHVwhJt4pC6yLju6iIU-7s/s1600/femi-kuti-na-their-way-be-thatart.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="446" data-original-width="744" height="191" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxS8WchxltTSiNc61jcM1d-gPbB1bR_Veb-JTIbTJqFDkEtxNOtX6WMqdj4mB-2mA0ALiqAAKbarKEnHkPf2_R2PNflf0LnyjHpN1vTaj-i8cJXdwfmi32MKHVwhJt4pC6yLju6iIU-7s/s320/femi-kuti-na-their-way-be-thatart.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>
</b><b>So while artists like Tekno (on ‘Rara’) and Wizkid (on ‘Ojuelegba’)
have found success by employing Afrobeat elements, no real Afrobeat
artist has acquired a third of the culture capital of Fela. Smartly, the
younger Kuti has worked some of these artists either on a song (like
‘Jaiye Jaiye’) or via invitations to the annual Felabration festival.</b><br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<b>
</b><b>On his music, however, Femi Kuti has mostly dispensed with the
pressure of bringing popstars to his own tracks. This
all-Afrobeat-no-pop style might be one reason that sometime ago a
European researcher expressed a measure of worry at the state of
Afrobeat before a Femi Kuti event. It looks like Femi’s music is more
popular overseas than in Lagos, he told me. The new single, 'Na Their
Way Be That', will hardly change that.</b><br />
<b>
</b><b>As with most of the songs in his oeuvre, 'Na Their Way Be That' comes
with two common Afrobeat features: it is brashly political, and it
makes you dance. For some reason, it appears the Nigerian political
class now come equipped with thicker skins or perhaps democracy thrives
on the practised indifference of politicians. Strangely, the absence of
much danger has come with a near-absence of political music in Nigeria.</b><br />
<b>
</b><b>In that regard, Femi Kuti has held the fort. Unfortunately, the
lyrics to the newer Femi songs are far too general and as a result
generic. Because they can apply to anyone, they apply to no one really.
As much as the previous single 'One People One World' consisted of
lyrics vending standard-issue joy, the new one targets an unnamed group
of unjust people:</b><br />
<b>
</b><b><em>No matter how much we try to change these kind of people oh<br />
They will always be unreasonable<br />
They have no respect for other human beings </em></b><br />
<b>
</b><b>You assume the song is directed at the bunch of Nigerian politicians.
The politicians themselves can assume the song is directed at any other
group of people.</b><br />
<b>
</b><b>But with Fela, everyone knew who was under attack. He was invested in
name-dropping and finger-pointing. By contrast, Femi is evasive. Music
from both men express a quest for a better country, but Femi is the
evasive democrat to Fela’s acerbic dictator.</b><br />
<b>
</b><b>If the words to the new single are not quite as biting as one might
want, the music is danceable still. Femi’s talent abides, even as age
has taken off the edge to his music. From a cool start the songs gets
off to quite a crescendo finish, all the way maintaining its
make-you-dance rhythm. The trajectory is reminiscent of the pattern of
his live shows at the venerated New Afrikan Shrine.</b><br />
<b>
Deeply political Afrobeat fans will crave lyrics that match the
health of Femi Kuti’s sound on 'Na Their Way Be That'. But even this
group should be pacified with knowing that musically the man has got it
still</b></div>

Coca-Cola has invited top artists from South Africa, Tanzania, Kenya,
Ethiopia, Mozambique and Uganda to create their versions of the 2018
FIFA World Cup anthem.<br />

A statement said Jason Derulo would create the official anthem but
that African musicians would get a chance to make local versions of the
song that celebrate their people’s passion for football through music.<br />
It is now known that the name of the official anthem is ‘Colours’ and
that it will be featured on Derulo’s forthcoming album. The upbeat
anthem, which features South African rapper Cassper Nyovest, celebrates the vibrancy and excitement that is associated with the world’s biggest sporting event.<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
“We know that the FIFA World Cup is a global cultural and social
phenomenon,” Coca-Cola vice-president of global assets and partnerships
Ricardo Fort said. “Every four years, people are drawn to this event
from all over the world due to the excitement and platform it provides.<br />
“We believe that music and football are intrinsically linked by the
passions they evoke so we are excited to welcome Jason to the team and
can’t wait to bring this upbeat anthem to the world ahead of the 2018
FIFA World Cup”<br />
The single is expected to follow in the footsteps of Shakira’s 2010
popular World Cup anthem ‘Waka Waka’, which featured well-known South
African band Freshlyground .<br />
“I was honoured to work with Coca-Cola to create an anthem
celebrating every team and their fans,” Derulo said. “The song ‘Colours’
represents the different flags and cultures from around the world, and
will get everyone moving to a unifying beat. I’m excited to finally tell
the world about this partnership as the excitement builds for the FIFA
World Cup.”<br />
The localised versions of ‘Colours’ will be performed at the FIFA
World Cup trophy tour, which is scheduled to take the 18-karat gold
trophy to various places across the continent, starting in Ethiopia
(24-25 February), then Kenya (26-27 February), Mozambique (28th
February), South Africa (1-3 March) and Uganda (5-6 March).<br />
The ‘Colours’ World Cup anthem is slated for an official release on 16 March. </div>

Drumming group Tambourinaires du Burundi (the Drummers of Burundi) will
perform at this year’s International Francophone Day at Moi Girls Social
Hall in Eldoret, Kenya. The 25 March event will also give young
performers a platform to show off their talent.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The day is a culmination of about two weeks of activities dubbed <em>Quinzaine de la Francophonie</em>,
which involves various activities across Kenya between 11 and 28 March.
These will include petanque tournaments, film screenings and a food
festival, among others. <br />
Tambourinaires du Burundi is a vibrant dance and drum ensemble that
specialises in traditional Burundian music. The group is known for its
captivating percussive music mixed with interjections of chants and
vigorous dances.<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
The language cooperation officer at the French embassy in Nairobi,
Johann Robinet, told Music In Africa that the organisers of the event
wanted to showcase the diversity of French culture to a Kenyan audience.
<br />
“Francophonie Day is designed to promote all the countries that are
part of the International Organisation of La Francophonie [OIF] to show
their different cultures to Kenyans,” he said.<br />
“As you know Burundi is a French-speaking country member of the OIF.
Tambourinaires du Burundi were picked because they are a drum and
dancing band that promotes Burundi.”<br />
The OIF is an international organisation representing countries and
regions where French is an adopted or customary language. It represents
countries where a significant proportion of the population speaks
French, or where there is a notable affiliation with the French culture.<br />
The aim of International Francophonie Day is to promote the French
language by giving it visibility. The celebration also acts as a
diplomatic forum with various embassies and international public
institutions represented.<br />
In addition, International Francophone Day and its wide-ranging
programme offers secondary schools in Kenya and their pupils an
opportunity to perform.<br />
A number of this year’s International Francophone Day activities will be held at Alliance Francaise
in Nairobi. The educational facility, which was founded in 1949, is
responsible for promoting a Kenyan arts. It has hosted well-known Kenyan
artists such as Sauti Sol, Elani and comedian Churchill before they found commercial success. Similar cultural events are also held the French embassy.<br />
“Anyone who wishes to perform, kindly let us know. We will have
dozens of performances in French by different Kenyan students,” Robinet
said.<br />

The new Olamide video opens with some terrible acting, goes through some
rather awful costume and overwrought choreography choices and ends with
a decent version of the popular shaku shaku dance.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe width="320" height="266" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/zW2FvyzmVfs/0.jpg" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/zW2FvyzmVfs?feature=player_embedded" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></div>
<br />
<br />
But these are surplus features. Once ‘Science Student’ got banned,
its video was mostly expected to answer a single question: How will
Olamide respond to the accusation by the Nigerian authorities that his
song promotes drug abuse?<br />
He gave an answer on social media, saying: “Don’t abuse alcohol. Stop
mixing what you don’t know about. Live responsibly and drink
responsibly”. But if that message was telling his listeners, the video
shows him living by example.<br />
After their vehicle stops moving at night, Olamide and friends head
towards a blinking light. A sudden burst of bad CG bats scares his
friends away, leaving the artist to go alone. He ends up at a decrepit
building housing a lab. There a group of the dancing undead do some
chemistry. We can accept that the undead are some of the planet’s best
dancers—at least since Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’—but why exactly do
they need stoichiometry?<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
The idea is perhaps metaphor: the undead represent drug addicts:
this, Olamide seems to say, is what happens when you mix substances for
the purpose of intoxication. If the point is unclear, some of the
dancers are aroused from sickbeds as Olamide walks through the building.<br />
To hammer the point home, one guy has his head aflame and several
walls are inscribed with anti-drug-use messages. A cup containing some
substance handed to the rapper is discarded at the same spot where “Say
no to Drugs” is inscribed. Apparently, the message on the wall should
be: Say No to Subtlety. The over seven-minute video then ends with
Olamide bursting into daytime, followed by a garishly dressed troupe
dancing to a mix of the music.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
If the Nigerian authorities have overdone their zealousness, Olamide
is overplaying his clearly hypocritical holiness. Fans will remember
that the last time he flung a cup in public, at a recent edition of the
Headies, he was already inebriated. And he has sang way too many songs
in praise of vice for anyone to believe in his rehabilitation.<br />
Indeed, you get the idea that Olamide is trying hard to prevent any
misinterpretation of a message he almost certainly never had when he
began recording the song. Does anyone really think Olamide was seeking
to tell his fans not to use intoxicants? At best, the plan was to
capture a reality that, according to This Day,
has seen “500 000 bottles of codeine…consumed by young Nigerians across
the country, same with the intake of tramadol, rohypnol, marijuana, and
other opioids”. But from song to video, respect for the NBC ban has
transformed Olamide as messenger to Olamide the messiah.<br />
It has worked well for him. The song, spurred by the ambiguity of its
lyrics and its shaku shaku compliant production, quickly became a hit.
It also earned him a ban, which made some curious enough to seek the
song. Now its video has appeased the authorities with its over-flogged
anti-drug message. The video also continues Olamide’s use of gothic
elements and his flirtation with horror aesthetics—as seen in videos
ranging from 2012’s ‘Ilefo illuminati’ to 2013’s ‘Voice of the Street’
to ‘The Intro’ from his 2016 album <em>The Glory</em>.<br />
Thus without too much of a deviation from what he has always done,
Olamide has turned controversy to conquest. Not bad for a song that,
unless something else happens, will never again be heard on Nigerian
radio. It makes it all the more unfortunate that someone didn’t think to
cut out a chunk of the time spent doing that ludicrous dance routine in
clownish costume .<br />
